Serenity Garden

August 5, 2014 – Cape Breton Post

Northside Community Guest Home garden is partnership in caring

NORTH SYDNEY — And the Long Shoots, Deep Roots thereupetic garden next to the guest home, is quickly becoming her favourite spot.

The therepeutic garden was developed to maintain a linkage between seniors in the community, residents of the nursing home and youth.

"We appreciate the support of the regional municipality in allowing us to build the garden on municipal property," said guest home recreation director Kelly Carter.

She described the garden as a partnership in caring between the Northside Community Guest Home Foundation, the North Sydney Garden Club, Kiwanis Golden K Club and Munroe Academy.

The garden was jointly funded through a New Horizons grant and the guest home foundation at a cost of aproximately $25,000. The main contractor for the project was AMD Landscapping of Sydney.

Employment and Social Development Canada's community-based projects under the New Horizons for Seniors Program enables seniors to share their knowledge, skills and experiences and ensure seniors can benefit from, and contribute to, the quality of life in their communities through active living and participation in social activities.

"The project plans were in the works for over a year," Carter said. "As regular visitors to the guest home, the students at Munro Academy helped with the planning and as we continue to maintain and build on what we have, the students will be invited to be a part of future planting and improvements to the garden."

Carter added that along with maintaining positive relationships in the community, the garden showcases North Sydney's beautiful Munro Park.

"Family members who have loved ones in the guest home can sit in the garden, relax and enjoy the surroundings," Carter said. "There is such a lovely view of the water, it really is peaceful. It's important that the garden is accessible to the community as well."

The Kiwanis Golden K Club hold some meetings at the guest home to allow former members to stay connected.

"We want to maintain that linkage, to bring them to us, it's the same with the North Sydney Garden Club," Carter said. "It's also a thank you to the community for being a part of us, of what takes place at the guest home."

She added that special projects will continue to involve Munro Academy, seniors and community groups.

"We also want the people who use the boardwalk to feel welcome to sit and enjoy the beautiful surroundings," Carter said. "We were luckly to have horticultural therapist Janice Morrison's input into what flowers to plant in the gardens. It's an ideal spot for people to get away from everyday life."
