Your Donations At Work

Dr.Dana Hawley and Dr.Heidi Higgins visit with Cara House resident, David Bailey as Laura Serroul, RN, demonstrates how to use Vital Signs monitors that were purchased by the Northside Community Guest Home Foundation. Dr. Hawley and Dr. Higgins have each donated $5000.00 to the Foundation, making it possible to purchase equipment to enhance resident care at the Guest Home. The Guest Home has named resident rooms, the "Dunvegan Suite" in memory of Dr. Hawley's grandmother, Catherine (MacLellan) Beaton and the "Glace Bay Suite" in memory of Dr. Higgins' grandmother, Grace Furey.

THANK YOU to all of the Heroes at the Northside Guest Home!

In October of 2009, a generous group of staff began a club to support the development of a safe, enclosed garden in Cara House.  Members of the Heroes Club donate $5 per paycheck with half going toward a 50/50 draw and half going toward the "Heroes Garden".  A $12,000.00 goal was set for the development costs and the group will reach this goal in April, 2013!!

Please fill out your voting card by FRIDAY, MARCH 29th to vote how you would like your future support to be used.  Forms are available in the sign in areas and can be returned to the Foundation Office or the Main Office.

Goal Met!

February 4, 2013

The Northside Community Guest Home Foundation held its 3rd annual “Gala for the Ages” fundraiser on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the John J. Nugent Fireman’s Centre in Sydney Mines.  This event featured community celebrities in a comical beauty pageant that was MC’d by Scott Boyd of 101.9 The Giant and judged by Georgette Young and Nadia Saker of Housewives in Heels catering.  The community worked together to raise $18,000.00, bringing the Guest Home’s “Complete the Dream” campaign to a close.  The Guest Home would like to thank the many sponsors, volunteers, pageant contestants and attendees for their generous support. Event sponsors and campaign donor listings can be found on the Foundation’s website:

“This community really pulled together to help us meet the fundraising needs for the development of Cara House. We can now begin to work toward supporting the new developments we have in plan and toward upgrading other units and equipment.”

Cara House is filled with resident-focused furnishings, equipment and activity items thanks to numerous supporters. It contains 39 single rooms, all with a view of either the water or the Heroes Garden (garden development supported by Guest Home staff members) and with 12 rooms having ceiling lifts.  The remaining rooms have tracks that await lifts as funding becomes available.  It contains a geo-thermal heating system, a beautiful Activity lounge - the Annie Verschuren Lounge - with hand-crafted chapel service items, a portable piano and sound system, along with three dining rooms, three living rooms, a hair salon, outdoor patios, beautiful gardens, a family room with a kitchenette, shower and reclining chairs and a state of the art therapeutic room containing items like an ultrasonic bladder scanner, wheelchair scale, blanket warmer, sit to stand lift, therapeutic bed, recumbent and arm bicycles.  Campaign donors also made it possible to purchase wireless bed alarms, vital signs monitors, and much more.

The Complete the Dream campaign began approximately two and a half years ago with the development of the Guest Home’s latest addition, Cara House.  Cara House is home to 39 long term care residents and provides services to all 144 residents of the Guest Home as well as to 25 enriched housing residents.

Second Annual "BELLS OF CARE" Campaign

The Northside Community Guest Home Foundation's second annual "Bells of Care" campaign has raised $4,295.00 so far with donations still coming in.

The campaign was celebrated last night with donors assisting to hang the donated bells on a Christmas tree while enjoying Christmas goodies, apple cider donated by Atlantic Super Store, carolling with help from Bob Quinn, Lucy & Boyd MacNeil, and a demonstration by the Guest Home’s physiotherapist, Julie Reeves, on some of the items being purchased with the donated dollars.   “The generosity of our donors and volunteers allows us to continue enhancing the quality of living for the Residents and the services provided here at the Northside Community Guest Home; our sincere thanks.”
